I Left My Heart in San Francisco

Frisco was never my first choice if it comes to a living place but I can imagine myself living in this city. It is quite homey and welcoming although I heard a lot of awful stories on how cars' windows got broken and things got stolen. But the slopes of the roads are beautiful.

An Eco-Friendly City

My first day in San Francisco was the 69th Independence Day of Indonesia, a country that I call home. So my family and I decided to wear red and white--the colours of our flag--to commemorate the day even though we were not home.

To be honest, SF is not very photogenic when taken from the city central point of view (but then again maybe it's my photography skill). However, it is pretty damn amazing from the top (Twin Peaks) which post will be next on the queue. What surprised me was the fact that it is an eco-friendly city. We had to pay 10 cents for a paper bag or a plastic bag, even in a department store. So if you want to buy a cardigan, it's either you pay 10 cents for the carrier bag or you can chuck it inside yours. I thought it was ridiculous at first. I heard about paying for a plastic bag in supermarkets or eco-friendly independent shops, but a department store? Where luxury is what you pay, a luxurious service should be what you get, and that includes a paper bag. But, when I think about it again it is an effective way for the whole city unitedly do the same 'campaign' to reduce the unnecessary use of paper/plastic bags because $0.10 every time you buy something can pile up to $300 before you know it.

I thought it would be a short post, but turns out I'm in the mood to share my own way of contributing to the world's go-green activity. So I have a container for paper bags and another one for plastic bags at home and I see them getting stuffier and stuffier, and I rarely use them except reusing the plastic bag from the supermarkets for dust bin. But the paper bags just stay there. That's why when I shop, I try to put the new bought stuff into my own bag to reduce the use of the carrier bag, even when the shopkeeper insisted on giving me a bag. Or, if your own handbag is not big enough and you plan on having a shopping spree, you can maximise only one or two plastic bag and not carrying 10 bags which will end up in your rubbish bin anyway (which I don't recommend if they are still reusable). So yeah, let's reduce, reuse, and recycle together!

Sin City

I hated Las Vegas. More than I dislike Los Angeles. Why, you may ask? Because visiting Las Vegas in the summer is like having hair dryer on full power on your face, in the afternoon, when the sun is scorching hot without any wind blowing whatsoever. Once you get out of the air-conned building, you're getting into an oven. Difference is, the oven is open-air and not in a closed box. I literally cannot walk 5 minutes outside those pretty hotels, which by the way, smelled like a thousand bottles of air freshener break into the interior to weaken the smell of cigarettes that was still as strong as the heat outside the building. Even at night there was no wind! I think London should be more generous in sharing its wind, no? (Pardon me for comparing everything to my beloved city). I guess one of the sins they committed was to let tourists suffer in the summer. Aaaannd I'm complaining too much.

Although, I think it's pretty cool that they have different Cirque Du Soleil shows in different hotels. For me personally, it is a must see when you're in Las Vegas. I watched Ka and the stage decor was amazing!

Wolfgang Puck's Postrio Bar and Grill. It was heavenly but so tummy-filling. American sized plate is one of a kind.
